A Harmony of Heritage and Urban Renewal - in collaboration with Panos Dragonas
LOCATION
Athens, Greece
YEAR
2021
This project seamlessly blends aesthetic refinement, functional design, and cultural preservation, transforming Aischinou and Phrynichou Streets into a cohesive urban space that connects Athens’ historical legacy with contemporary needs. Durable gray concrete cobblestones are used for both the roadway and sidewalks, with black cobblestones distinguishing pedestrian zones. White marble slabs extend along Phrynichou Street, adding elegance to the streetscape. Central to the design are bronze plaques inscribed with verses from the poet Constantine Cavafy, creating a cultural corridor along the streets. Embedded floor lighting and 3.5-meter-tall lighting poles enhance visibility and atmosphere, contributing to a welcoming environment, particularly at night. The careful separation of pedestrian and vehicular zones, achieved through elevation changes and low curbs, ensures safety and ease of movement. This revitalization enriches the urban fabric, merging historical identity with modern urbanity and reinforcing the functional and cultural vitality of the space.
