Project completed
In collaboration with Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy

LOCATION

Cyclades, Aegean Sea

YEAR

2014-16

The purpose of this study is the establishment of P.D. morphological rules that will function in addition to the other levels of spatial design, contributing to the better arrangement of the space and the upgrade of its aesthetics through the morphology of the structure, which will be in harmony with the landscape and tradition, without inhibiting architectural creativity.

The scope of the study includes:

-Settlements that are classified as traditional or should have this characterization.

-Settlements that are not classified as “traditional” or “interesting” .

-Rural space in zones defined around the settlements.

The study was conducted in two phases. Phase A–Analysis and Phase B-Proposal

Phase A

The methodology of Phase A of the study contains the following actions:

  1. Field research, observation and detailed collection and analysis of the data that characterize the study area.
  2. Collection of all applicable legislation and evaluation of the existing institutional regulatory framework (urban planning regulation – building conditions)
  3. Recognition of architectural features and the landscape in each spatial unit, Analysis and coding of the different forms – types of the local architectural tradition.
  4. Recording of the actual building conditions, which are take place in the settlements in relation to its regulatory boundaries and recognition of their coherent part.

Phase B                                                                                                                                                      Final classification of all settlements in categories that correspond to 3 degrees of protection (“remarkable”, “interesting”, and “indifferent”). The Presidential Decrees are the final part of the study, which summarizes virtually all the individual stages of elaboration (in map form). The regulations included in them reflect the fundamental principles of the type and morphology of the local architectural tradition, which were sought in order to form a framework that would allow the freedom of creation based on a modern architectural language, while respecting the architectural past that surrounds it.
